Most of us already know of the crusade against comics waged by Fredric Wertham in the first half of the 20th century, but how many people know about Sterling North, Anthony Comstock, or Estes Kefauver?

The sad truth is, Wertham was not alone.

Comic books due respect

Growing up as a comic book fan and budding comic book creator, I always fell victim to the stereotype of comics as adolescent power fantasies. I could not convince anyone comics could be, and have been, serious works of literature and art, capable of reflecting and even influencing the society around them.

For those who remain uninformed and obstinate in their negative views about comics, I’d like to take a moment to introduce a side of comics many have never known existed.

In OUR GODS WEAR SPANDEX, author Christopher Knowles examines comics as a form of modern storytelling passing down achetypes from the most ancient of civilizations, societies and religions.

But was the book any good? Quite honestly, I think it fell just a little short of what I was hoping for.

Elections Update

Y’know, I like to think of myself as a politically savvy kinda guy. I’m no expert, and I don’t claim to be, but I try to pay attention and I have a greater interest in politics than many others I know. So of course I’ve been following this election very closely. I’m not a supporter of George W. Bush (who is?), and I was looking forward to voting democrat in ‘08.  I used to say I’d vote for anybody or anything before I’d vote for Bush, but he’s not in this election and the democratric frontrunner is Hillary … which has me rethinking my entire position.
